For four years I taught at BIS two doors down from Christine's - and for half that time we shared different Year 10 and 11 groups for both English and English Literature IGCSEs - so, of course, I got to know Christine better. I admired and respected her enormously as a colleague and a friend. We shared an interest in Russian literature which I think she had studied at Keele. Amidst the carnage of the Thai management’s war with Dulwich, sometimes we would refer in passing to Brodsky or Akhmatova when BIS itself was coming under siege - but Christine never wavered, always generous and committed to the highest professional standards. She would battle on against all distractions, and give her best to every student fortunate enough to come under her tutelage. I recall how much she cared about our canine cousins - helping out in practical ways to alleviate the suffering of the many stray and wild dogs in Phuket. I knew more obliquely of another of her lives revelling in none too sedate live music on the island! Her devotion to rural Norfolk, its culture and beauty, was never far from her thoughts. I was able to lend her my battered old copy of 'Akenfield' (reminiscences of East Anglian countryfolk) which I was pleased made her happy and reminded her of fond times past. I am very sad that Christine cannot enjoy a long retirement with you all - which she so richly deserved. What a woman and what precious things she got us thinking about. Nico, I send you, Amy and Ashley our love and best wishes and I shall always be grateful for those four years teaching alongside Christine, and others, contributing to Derek Evans’ lovely English Department. She was most memorably among those who made it sparkle. Ian and Darika
